Transfer

After retrieval, the eggs are given approximately 4 hours to rest before insemination with sperm either through standard in vitro fertilization or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The embryos are then placed in incubators and checked daily for growth. After they have reached the appropriate growth stage for transfer, as determined by the physician, the embryos are transferred back to the uterus using a small, soft plastic tube known as a catheter shown above.

The flexible catheter slips easily through the cervix. Embryo transfer is a minor procedure that is performed in the Outpatient Surgical Unit.
