Consult

To prepare for an IVF cycle you will first meet with your physician, a specialist in reproductive endocrinology. Your physician will review your case, prior history, perform a physical examination and develop a treatment plan prior to starting in vitro fertilization.

The second step in your initial consult is a meeting with our nurse coordinator who will review your IVF schedule, answer questions, and discuss administration of your medications. Medications will often include Lupron, which is started just before the menstrual cycle begins. This medication helps to prevent early egg release from the ovary (ovulation), which allows the physicians to ensure optimal timing for in vitro fertilization.

These medications will prepare you for the next phase, ovulation induction.

In most cases, the coordinator meets with both the male and female partners. The IVF process involves coordinating many activities including stimulation of the ovaries, retrieval of the eggs, collection of semen, insemination, and replacement of the embryos into the uterus.

The coordinators ensure that all activities occur in the proper sequence at the appropriate time. The coordinators and physicians are available for personal or telephone contact throughout the IVF process.
